Novel CT geometries

The new WATCH CT scan geometry allows parallel beams to be recorded without quality-reducing re-sorting and interpolation, which can be optimally used by reconstruction algorithms developed within the group. This system is also able, taking into account that not a full circle is done around the object, to generate recordings with variable resolution and to vary this resolution during the scan. In addition to theoretical investigations, a first prototype of an open CT system based on the WATCH geometry was created, for which it could be shown quantitatively that the image quality of this system is superior to conventional third-generation CT methods and offers further advantages in clinical use. The application on a robot enables examinations in the vertical axis, which is particularly advantageous for examinations in spinal column patients, the causes of complaints can often be visualized much better under stress (while sitting or standing).

Topics:

  • Development of a robot-supported system for small animal and phantom examinations.
  • Quality description of the new CT geometry.
  • Installation of a new tube and detector system.
  • Calibration of the 3D-CT system of the robot including focus calibration.
  • Optimized reconstruction methods for 3D data.
  • Extension of a Monte Carlo simulation of the system.
